Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Safety Information

During 2009-2010 the WEC Safety Committee will develop a series of specialized safety policies to help promote a safe teaching and research culture.  These informational policies will be related to field research and teaching and will range from basic topics such as heat stroke and minor field injuries to aircraft and airboat safety.

CPR and First Aid Training Courses

The UF College of Medicine CPR and Safety Training Center offers a variety of courses (both free and fee based) including basic first aid, CPR, first responder, wilderness first aid, and wilderness first responder courses.  Some students, faculty, and staff may be required to maintain CPR and first aid certification as part of their job duties (e.g., to maintain scientific diver certification or participate in some field programs) and in these cases funds may be available from the sponsoring faculty member for course fees.

Prevention: Tick bites/Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis and/or other pathogens

Ticks are prevalent in wooded areas and there is always a possibility of contracting Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis and/or other pathogens from tick bites while outdoors in these areas especially during warm and dry periods.

Please read the important prevention information in the link below. This info will be provided to and distributed by TA's in all field labs. Extra copies available from Paul Proctor in B-1 N-Z/Equipment Room and Willie Wood in 118A N-Z/Operations.

Also, "lint removers" for rapid "seed tick" removal have been added to the auxillary first aid kits in all SFRC teaching vans and both research vehicles.

Thanks for being proactive in the prevention of injury from ticks!
